Brazil is a country of music, and the Campolina makes a music all of his own, beating out a ’tacka tacka tacka’ rhythm with his neat little feet. He takes his name from Cassiano Campolina, the Brazilian who first produced the breed at his Fazenda Tamque ranch near Buenos Aires.Campolina began his horse-breeding operation in 1857,but it was a mare he acquired in 1870 that was to be the matriarch of the breed named for him.

A black mare of Barb and Andalucian breeding called Medeia, she produced a dark grey colt called Monarca, who was to found the new breed, siring stock at the Fazenda Tamque for some 25 years.Other stallions were used, among them Clydesdale, Holstein and American Saddlebred, the aim being to produce a horse of great beauty as well as supreme paces.

His four- beat gait is known as the marcha verdadair (true march), which he can maintain at speeds of 9.6-12.8 kmph (6-8 mph)  The Campolina clearly shows his Spanish and Portuguese ancestry in his noble head and muscular stature. He possesses the flash and brio (arrogance and exuberance) of  the Peruvian Paso, as well as the much—admired easy gait of . the Mangalarga Marchador.
